CASE STUDY - BRIGHT EYES

Case Study - Bright Eyes.

Context and Content
This is a Gig poster designed by Steven Mitchell. The audience that this particular poster would attract, would firstly be those that are interested in the concert for Bright Eyes. From a graphical point of view the first thing that I notice about this piece is that the circles around the triangle and the lines coming from around the hand all look like something that would represent brightness. This leads onto the eye that is placed centrally above the name of the band, which links to the second half of the bands name ‘Eyes’. The colour of the poster is very significant as I feel the green represents money and is very similar to American US dollars. At first the background looked like a wash but when I took a closer look I realized that it has a floral pattern to it; which reminds me of my grans wallpaper that is very similar to the background.

Personal Response
What drew my attention to this poster was the design and detail of the work and how obviously a lot of thought has gone into the design, because it is really detailed and rather complex.  Another thing that drew my attention to this piece (even though its very small and minor) was the eye above the ‘Bright eyes” it reminds me of the illuminate and their conspiracy, so for me this poster has quite an weird feeling to it. What I like about the background pattern for this poster is that it is very subtle and only noticeable if you are really paying attention to it. The first thought I get is that of a compass and how cleverly the graphic designer has used hands to to draw your attention to the both the date and the venue of the concert.

Process
The experimentation for this poster probably would have included sketching, print screening and intaglio for the detail, then scanned or replicated into a photo editing software such as photoshop to put it together. The simple colour scheme would have been chosen to attract viewers as most film posters use multiple colours, throughout this poster he has only used different shades of green and minimal areas of white. There is a possibility that the graphic designer might have used different fills and levels of opacity on certain layers which could create different shades of green, there is also a chance that the graphic designer used a stroke on some layers to give them the look of inking. I feel the reason for the background being more translucent would be down to the fact that the designer wants to make the main piece of the poster more prominent.

Form
This poster is well organized and well laid out but the design gets quite busy when you get more into the middle. I feel that the typography that was used, was because it is big, bold and it stands out. And when thinking about hierarchy this typography was used because it is the biggest thing on the page and draws your eye to the centre of the page. The colour scheme of the gig poster is quite cool because green is in between yellow and blue so it would be on the cool side of yellow because it is closer to blue than it is to red. Initially your eyes are draw right to the centre of the poster to the band name, which is vital as this then has caught the attention of the public/fans. From the centre of the poster your eyes slowly start exploring the rest of the poster, which lead you to the other vital information such as the date and the location of the concert.
